scanner broken again

Well, not broken, but it gets halfway through scanning and then decides it's not actually installed after all.

Every scanner I've ever had just started doing this out of nowhere and I can never fix it, all I can do is get a different scanner and hope it lasts a while until it starts doing the same thing as the last one

it's really discouraging.
